Silver sulfadiazine is used to prevent or treat skin infection in patients with severe burns or other types of wounds such as leg ulcers or pressure sores.
Apply Silver sulfadiazine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not apply more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Try to apply it at the same time each day.
How to apply this medicine:
- Wash your hands.
- Clean the affected area before application.
- Apply all over the affected area to a depth of 3-5 mm. Always keep the area covered with this medicine. Re-apply to areas where it is removed by patient activity. Cover the treated areas if necessary.
- Wash your hands after using.
- Replace the cap of the tube.
Avoid contact with eyes or mouth. Rinse immediately with water if this medicine gets into your eyes or mouth. Alert your doctor if you start to have any problems with your eyes.
Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to apply your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Do not use Silver sulfadiazine if you ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to sulfonamides.
Alert your doctor if you are at the third trimester of your pregnancy as this medicine may not be suitable for you.
Do not give Silver sulfadiazine to premature infants or newborn infants below 2 months of age unless instructed to do so by the doctor.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- G6PD deficiency (an inherited blood disorder that affects the red blood cell)
- liver disease
- kidney disease
- burns over large areas of the body
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
If you are applying Silver sulfadiazine over a long period, you may need to have regular blood tests to check your body’s response to the medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these blood tests.
Silver sulfadiazine may cause any of the following side effects: skin irritation, burning, itching and rash.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop using Silver sulfadiazine and inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.
This medicine may cause the level of your white blood cells to drop.
White blood cells help your body to fight infections. A fall in the level of your white blood cells may put you at higher risk for infections, such as coughs, colds and flu, which may lead to more serious infections. Avoid crowded places and people who are sick. Alert your doctor if you have a fever, or a cough or flu that does not go away.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking or using any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. Protect from light.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
